Letter to the Editor
Alumni, residents embarrassed by students in riot: Letter 1

I am one of 2,500 volunteer Alumni Admissions counselors. It breaks my heart when young adult students and their friends think that selfish, poor behavior that turns ugly is an appropriate way for "adults" to behave. Regardless of the "brain trust" of students, it reflects on the caliber of young person to which we will soon be entrusting our leadership.

Furthermore, it is a breech of a belief that "my right to do what I want stops where those rights conflict with others rights." Having fun does not include destructive behavior on the part of anyone.

I am currently trying to encourage some students to accept the offer of admissions to Penn State. These students live in Alabama. Since the news of the disgusting exhibition on Saturday made many front pages, including the local paper in Tuscaloosa, I hope no one withdraws from considering Penn State.

Will I cease to be an Alumni Admissions counselor? No. Will I remove Penn State from my will or stop annual modest gifts? No. Do I think such poor behavior among young adults is all right just because they are in college? No. Do I think most Penn State students agree with the stupid few who think it is smart to provoke risking the life of some, to injure someone or destroy property? No.

Is such behavior childish? Yes. Grow Up!
