Letter to the Editor
Actions by students in riot disgraceful for all of PSU

I have never been more disgusted or outraged as I was Friday by the drunken display of ignorance and immaturity presented by my fellow Penn State students. While watching from afar, I cannot fully explain the overwhelming ill feeling generated in my gut while witnessing one half of Beaver Avenue being doused and chased away with pepper spray, while the other half screamed in retaliation, "We are . . . Penn State." What do these words mean? Do they not stand to demonstrate our pride and unity as a great university? Alcohol abuse does not excuse or warrant senseless acts of vandalism and violence. Furthermore, violence and destruction are inexcusable means of self-expression. As I fled from the unnerving scene, I saw the combination of testosterone and alcohol at its worst with the display of pathetic little tough guys tearing down a street sign together.

I have always been extremely proud of the university I attend and the quality of students that surround me as peers. However, this Friday was a most shameful night for our university and the reputation of its students. As an outraged and ashamed senior at Penn State, I wish to extend my sincerest apology on behalf of my peers, to the community and especially the State College police who had to personally endure the battle of calming and extinguishing the drunken fire raging inside students' minds and bodies. I hope and pray that this will never happen again.
