Some officers overreacted in using immediate force
After witnessing the riot on Friday night, I am a very concerned with the way the police handled the situation. From my point of view on the sidewalk, I did not hear one police officer give the command to leave the area. When officers persistently sprayed groups of students who were trying to return to their buildings, they went too far. I watched as officers chased residents of the Beaver Hill apartment complex into their lobby and continued to use pepper spray against them. Because of these actions by police, I feel that they should be held more accountable for their actions. How can I report these acts of unnecessary force by particular officers if I don't know who is responsible? First, not one police officer was identifiable by either their name or a badge number. Second, there were three law enforcement agencies present during the confrontation. There were state police intermingled with State College police and University Police Services. Which agency holds responsibility for the actions of all the officers? If police officers are given the power to carry pepper spray and batons, surely citizens must be given the power of knowledge. Being able to identify an officer via name or number will hold officers accountable for their actions and will deter corruption.
