Letter to the Editor
Awareness about racism will not solve all problems
Every student at this school knows racism exists. We are reminded of this everyday, thanks, in part to the Collegian, which publishes an incident every day to "raise awareness." Even though racism is very publicized at Penn State, with many editorials written in this column about it, the problem pervades. Why? I mean with all the time that the Collegian, USG, and other groups devote to exploring racism on campus, why is it still a problem? Couldn't we have come up with a solution by now? Here's the answer: Racism is something that we've lived with since the beginning of time. It is impossible to expect that today some miracle will allow everyone, regardless of race, to get along with everyone else. The best course of action for everyone is to accept the fact that there is racism in this world and learn to get around it. This will infuriate people who think that there's some magical solution to eliminate racism. Advocates say that they need to raise awareness of racism on this campus. Take a poll: I guarantee 100 percent of students know racism exists. The solution to racism is not by publicizing it, as is currently done. There is no viable solution to stopping racism because you cannot force people what to think. To try and control people's minds is a sin far greater than racism yet is committed everyday by self-proclaimed fighters of equality.
