Collegian is open forum; should have printed ad
Within a school as large as The Pennsylvania State University, The Daily Collegian is one of the few open forums accessible to all students. When the student newspaper chooses not to express an opinion because it is too incendiary, we must ask ourselves if the best interests of the student body are being considered. Should our eyes be shielded from a controversy because we are deemed unfit to maturely discuss the views presented? This is an incredibly slippery slope that The Collegian should choose not to walk down. We can't just stick our heads in the sand and pretend that the bad things aren't happening. I have not read any of David Horowitz's advertisement, but I think that if not printing initiates a good deal of discussion and debate, just think what could be accomplished if it is presented to the student body. As Kingman Brewster said, "Universities should be safe havens where ruthless examination of realities will not be distorted by the aim to please or inhibited by the risk of displeasure."
