Riot after basketball game deprives team of limelight

It's such a shame. The national attention bestowed on the university over the past few weeks courtesy of our well-deserving, hard-working men's basketball team was priceless. Unfortunately, the actions of a few drunks who apparently don't appreciate the consequences of their actions have grabbed the limelight. Congratulations. Now, the riots will be the last thing folks across the country see and remember from Penn State's participation in this year's NCAA tournament.

That's not exactly fair to the men's basketball team, considering they're the ones who worked so hard to put us on the front page of countless newspapers across the country. Nor is it fair to the overwhelming majority who can conform their behavior to accepted standards in a civilized society. As was demonstrated last Sunday after PSU's win over UNC, it is possible to celebrate without becoming violent.

The impact of Saturday night's riots extends far beyond "Happy Valley." Potential students and their parents see the news, as well as hundreds of thousand of alumni. I'm also guessing police in riot gear on Beaver Avenue blasting the unruly populace with pepper spray does not weigh favorably for Penn State. These are not images of the kind of university I want to support. I could see if this was a one-time occurrence, but this is the third time over the last few years that some members of the student body have taken something positive and turned it into a catastrophe. Simply put, learn to control your emotions.
