Letter to the Editor
Fighting racism with hate does not solve problems

This letter is in response to an letter written by Libby Leonard from Friday's newspaper. In her letter, the journalism major said that "even changing one person's narrow perspective into a more tolerant one accomplishes something." I would have found her opinion a noble one if she had not preceded it with her own scathing stereotype about people from the "inbred, washboard-playing, idiot garden" who also "most likely own lawn jockeys." That seems like a pretty narrow perspective to me. How can I possibly take her position about tolerance seriously when she obviously lacks the virtue herself?

Libby attempted to take the high ground of denouncing racism while in the same breath revealing her own stereotypes and biases for all to read. She could have made her point without all of the personal attacks. I am sure that she feels very deeply and passionately about fighting racism, but people who hate will not be persuaded to change their beliefs when confronted with more hate. Letss face it, we all have a lot of work to do when it comes to changing our hearts and minds.
