Officers at scene of riot sprayed innocent people
"Run home, now!" was all I heard. I replied, "I can't run" and was promptly pushed to the ground by one of State College's police officers. A face and ear full of mace later, I was helped to my feet by a friend. This incident occurred on my way home from another friend's apartment to my fraternity house, traveling away from campus on South Garner Street. While I understand that the police needed to clear Beaver Avenue of drunk students, there was no reason for an officer to push down an innocent, relatively sober, disabled student who was causing no trouble onto the ground and spray him straight on with mace. I think this act was indicative of the behavior of many State College police officers downtown on Friday night. While I recognize that order had to be maintained, there was no cause for the brutality that accompanied it. People, such as myself, who were neither violent nor uncooperative did not deserve this reaction and should not have to put up with it. Cheering for your school team and being disabled were not punishable offenses last time I checked, so why are they now?
