Baseball heads to Indiana in search of answers
The Lions are only 1-5 in games decided by one run this season.

Sunshine has come with bitter cold and blustery wind for the Penn State baseball team this season.

Last weekend on a dismal rainy Saturday they were beaten thoroughly by Delaware, twice. The sun came out on Sunday, and so did Penn State's game. But the temperature dropped, and so did Penn State's record. A suicide squeeze in the bottom of the tenth won the game for the Blue Hens on a day that left the players cold and wind-burned, looking for answers.

The Nittany Lions will take their search to Bloomington, Ind. this weekend where they will face the Hoosiers. They will play four games at Sembower Field starting today at 3.

Indiana is 11-7-1 after beating Valpariaso on Wednesday and currently owns a five-game winning streak.

"We're starting to come together lately," Indiana head coach Bob Morgan said. "This early in the season it's a matter of playing together as a team."

The Nittany Lions have struggled in that area so far.

"We haven't put together a complete game yet," Nittany Lion head coach Joe Hindelang said. "We're playing against the game of baseball right now. We need to get solid hitting, good pitching and make routine plays."

The Lions (6-14) are 1-5 in games decided by one run.

"We've gotten things going at certain times," Penn State infielder Chris Wright said. "We're just not finishing."

Southpaw Dan McCall (0-0, 3.28 ERA), the Lion's most consistent hurler thus far, will get the start today. Aaron Tressler (2-2, 7.36 ERA) and Justin Nash (1-2, 5.02 ERA) will pitch in Saturday's double-header. Nash was roughed up in a blowout loss to Delaware, giving up five hits and six runs in just one and one third innings of work.

Penn State ace Pete Yodis (1-4, 9.55 ERA), who has had his own struggles, will start on Sunday.

"Pete was a bright spot last weekend," Hindelang said. "Obviously we need him to find his spots and get his slider biting to be successful."

The Hoosiers will counter with a rotation of Dave Otte (5-0, 3.03 ERA), Brad Edwards (1-3, 6.47 ERA), Matt Rice (1-2, 6.75 ERA) and Chris Behrens (3-0, 1.80 ERA).

Indiana hopes to use aggressive base-running to produce runs against the Lions. They have stolen 54 bases in 61 attempts so far this season.

"Our kids can run," Morgan said. "We know they've got a great catcher back there in (Chris) Netwall, so that will take us out of our game a bit."

The Nittany Lions practiced outside on Monday and Tuesday this week, the first times this season, due to weather. Indiana faces similar limitations, and both teams hope to gain momentum with the arrival of spring and more time out on the field.

"That's two times outside in two months of practice," Hindelang said. "It's just a lift to get outside. Baseball is meant to be played outside, not inside a cramped poorly-lit building."

Donnie Wright brings a ten-game hitting streak into the weekend for the Lions. He hit three homeruns last weekend and leads the team in hits (24), RBI (16) and doubles (5).
