Letter to the Editor
Something must be done to eliminate race tensions
I'm writing this letter in response to Sam Spadafora, who criticized the Collegian for its daily printing of racist incidents that take place at Penn State. I agree with him on one point: Something does need to be done. Something needs to be done with students like him, who believe that race issues will magically disappear if we ignore them. He writes, "This issue will not go away as long as you continue to print these ridiculous articles." Sam also makes the outrageous accusation that the incidents being printed were "simply made up from someone's imagination just to get attention." Racism is a very real issue at Penn State, and it cannot be wished or ignored or willed away by the people who deal with it every single day. Perhaps the racist remarks printed in the Collegian are trivial to Spadafora, but to many of us, they are vicious slurs that will only grow stronger if students turn the other cheek. These incidents are not here for you and your friend's entertainment, nor are they a laughing matter; they are serious attacks on your fellow Penn State students. Emma Goldman speaks the truth: "The most violent element in society is ignorance."
