Letter to the Editor
Writer's opinion of racism reflection of intolerance
I was floored when I read the opinion of a Penn State student, Sam Spadafora, who insisted that covering racist acts perpetuates the problem. In his letter, he also admitted to laughing at acts of intolerance. And he thinks media coverage perpetuates the problem. How about ignorance and bigotry? The fact that he and his friends admitted to laughing at the events is proof that racist acts need to be covered. Spadafora and his friends definitely need to continue reading about the acts because they obviously missed the point. Mr. Spadafora, since you clearly missed the point of printing the racists incidents, I would like to clarify some things for you. No, the point is not to make Penn State students laugh at acts of hatred. The point is to educate them about the problem, and even you admitted that there is a problem. Yes, you too can submit an act of intolerance. You would not be turned away because you are white. Unlike you, I have read all of the hateful acts that were compiled by the black student leaders, and some of the incidents were submitted by Caucasian students. However, you would not know that because instead of making an effort to become informed and enlightened, you chose to make fun of something that you didn't understand. Isn't that ironic? Racism is born from that same mentality. As a Penn State student, I don't care if the rest of the students are "sick and tired of hearing about the problems we have with racism." I am not! I am sick and tired of racism! You said racism "will not go away if you keep printing it." That is an incorrect statement. It will not go away if we continue to ignore it. "
