"We leave a trail of destruction," said Noah Figlin.
Noah is the singer/guitarist for the State College-based band No Offense, but he isn't talking about trashed hotel rooms or any other destructive rock star antics. He is joking about the equipment failures that have recently plagued the band.
No Offense, with its punk-based sound, has been playing shows in the State College area for almost two years now. The three-piece band also features members DJ Williams on drums and Josh Messing (freshman-division of undergraduate studies) on bass and backing vocals. The band was originally formed two years ago when Figlin and Williams were freshmen in high school, and has since gone through several lineup changes before settling on the current one a year ago.
No Offense began by playing cover songs, but has replaced the covers with their own songs over time, creating their own style of music in the process.
"Our diversity, in lots of different types of music you don't see that often," said Williams, citing it as a strong point for the group. The band includes NOFX, Metallica, as well as Chuck Berry in its list of influences, yielding a diverse combination of sounds. The band's sound has a primarily punk foundation, but it also brings in elements of blues, metal and rock-a-billy. This means the band's set list varies from fast-paced, sing-along punk to improvised swing and back again.
No Offense band members compiled their unique sound on a four song self-titled EP that they released themselves about six months ago. The band plans to follow up its EP by heading into the studio at the end of April to begin work on a full-length effort. "Going into the studio was a blast," Figlin said. "It was the first time I knew for sure what I wanted to do."
In the past six months, No Offense has played shows at the Crowbar, 420 E. College Ave., and the Co-Op, 319 E. Calder Way, with a mixture of local bands and several national acts such as Mustard Plug and King Django. This April will see No Offense playing a string of shows in the area.
The band will be competing in the Battle of the Bands at the HUB-Robeson Center on April 7, and will also be playing a show with River City High at the Co-Op on April 14.
Having two members of the band in high school has kept No Offense from being able to take its music on the road, but the band hopes to change that this summer.
"We are planning to do some sort of Pennsylvania tour this summer, hopefully hit Pittsburgh and Philly," Figlin said. The band seems excited and confident about taking its music to new audiences. "It's the thing I'm anticipating the most," Williams said.
"If anyone wants to donate a van, give us a call," said Figlin with a laugh.
No Offense will play at Crowbar on April 3, in a benefit show for the Association for Retarded Citizens with Green Eggs and Spam.
