Cross-genre country band croons at bar
Southern Culture on the Skids will play at Crowbar.

Collegian Staff Writer

Good old-fashioned country music is rarely heard blasting from the streets downtown. That will all change when Southern Culture On the Skids performs Wednesday night at the Crowbar, 420 E. College Ave.

Tickets for this all-ages show are available for $13 at the door and $12 in advance.

This show is part of a tour supporting the band's latest CD, Liquored Up and Lacquered Down, released this past fall. A mix of Deep South flavor with rockabilly roots, the album stays true to the cross-genre style that made Southern Culture On the Skids popular within the indie music scene.

This release comes three years after the band's last album because of a label change. Southern Culture On the Skids recently signed with TVT Records and eMusic after releasing two albums on Geffen Records.

The band signed with Geffen in 1995 and released Dirt Track Date and then Plastic Seat Sweat in 1997. The new partnership with TVT and eMusic was much more comfortable for the band and allows a more personal approach in dealing with fans.

Formed in Chapel Hill, N.C. in 1985, Southern Culture On the Skids was the creation of guitarist Rick Miller. After releasing its debut CD, the band went on a hiatus and experienced some member changes. Southern Culture On the Skids re-emerged in 1992 with new members Mary Huff (bass, vocals) and Dave Hartman (drums), boasting a sophomore LP, Too Much Pork for Just One Fork.

Southern Culture On the Skids was featured last April at Australia's East Coast Blues and Roots Music Festival. The performance was highlighted when women from the audience were asked onstage to dance and eat chicken.

The band most recently performed at the House of Blues in Anaheim, Ca. to usher in the new millennium on New Year's Eve. This current tour commenced soon after.

Cowboy Mouth will open for Southern Culture On the Skids. Both bands will perform for the next four shows of the tour. Cowboy Mouth, a modern rock quartet, released Easy this past June. Cowboy Mouth was first introduced to a mass audience in 1995 when the band was asked to open for friends Hootie and the Blowfish. Those shows gave way to an MCA record deal and the release of 1996's Are You With Me?

Doors will open at 8 p.m. with Cowboy Mouth taking the stage first. For tickets and additional information, contact the Crowbar at 237-0426 or at www.crowbarlivemusic.com.
