I have been following the recent controversy surrounding the ad submitted by David Horowitz to numerous college newspapers regarding the issue of reparations for slavery. I have learned that Horowitz submitted the ad to The Daily Collegian. I am writing to express my support for the position that The Daily Collegian should run the ad as well as any ads submitted in opposition to his viewpoint.
First, the issue in question is a profound one that requires the consideration of all viewpoints. The more knowledge we have, the better able we are to decide our position on this issue. Second, as you state at the beginning of your letters to the editor Web page, "The Collegian welcomes diverse viewpoints in columns, reader forums and letters to the editor. An ongoing intellectual dialogue on issues is an important service to our readers and our community." I realize that the ad may be odious to some readers. However, I believe that the principle of freedom of speech is so important that it should never take a back seat to the fear of hurting someone's feelings. I hope that the staff of The Daily Collegian will have the courage to uphold this principle.
