Letter to the Editor
Protection of environment essential role for everyone
In his letter yesterday, Sean Clark called those of us who care about the environment "knucklehead liberals." I thank him for the compliment. There are many millions of people around the world who believe, as I do, that protecting the environment is an essential role of individuals and governments. George Bush made his the Environmental Protection Agency administrator, Christine Whitman, look like a fool. The day before Bush announced his reversed position, environmental activists were told in Washington, D.C., by administration officials that Bush would move ahead with Whitman's recommendation to limit carbon dioxide emissions from coal-burning power plants. One Bush loyalist said on PBS that he was proud to have a president who could admit that he made a mistake during the campaign. I'm always amused how Republican lies that affect our lives are actually "corrected mistakes," which we are supposed to forgive, yet Democrats' lies about personal sexual choices somehow legitimize $60 million investigations. If I were Whitman, I would quit my job right now. Her boss, to quote Bush when he referred to New York Times reporter Adam Clymer, is "a major league a--hole." Bush promised to be bipartisan, a uniter and pro-environment. In his first 60 days in office, he has proved to be solidly partisan, a divider (nominating John Ashcroft, the Senate's version of Antonin Scalia, as attorney general), and the poster-boy for environmentally careless big business.
