Environmental concerns should cut across parties
After reading the recent opinion on environmentalists and common sense, I felt compelled to offer a few thoughts. First of all, name-calling and creating party prejudice is not the answer to debate or societal progression. The battle between the industry and environment should not be condemned. We should not forget that the industrial infrastructure is and always has been supported by the environmental infrastructure (earth). The very same place we all eat, drink, breathe and live. Regardless of party line, we all share the same basic needs. Now that we are all on the same planet, we can approach regulations on industrial pollution. These are the very regulations that protect our air and water, which correlates to healthy humans. I would also like to mention the countless other species of plants and animals that inhabit this small rock with us and do not vote or write policy. The attack should not be on regulations, but on the motives for deregulation. The attack should be on a government controlled by special interest and corporations. Our democracy is for sale to the highest bidder and with each sale we suffer and the environment suffers. It boils down to what the American people want, do we want monetary gain and consumerism or do we want sustainability? Sustainability will still afford us meaningful lives, and we will be investing in the future, not capitalism.
