Letter to the Editor
Insulting one's opponents by name-calling is childish
Sean Clark's letter in yesterday's paper bothered me. I understand his viewpoint on the "radical environmentalists," even though I don't agree with it. I am writing because I don't feel that anyone should call me a "knuckleheaded liberal" who "lacks the simple brain capacity" to understand the effects of a loss of power due to a lack of power in parts of this country. If he wants to make an intelligent opinion that people will respect, he can do it without the name-calling. As a junior political science major, he should learn that you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar. I grew up in Pennsylvania's coal region. The ground is ripped apart like a gutted animal and coal banks litter the highways instead of lush green hills. The rivers are orange from mining runoff. And it doesn't stop there. Pollutants from burning these fuels are putting holes in our sky and acid in our rain. My biggest fear is that 50 years from now, my children and grandchildren will never know what it was like to walk into the woods and smell birches and pines and see all the animals that I saw. If that means multi-million dollar corporations have to spend some money to ensure this, I think we should demand it is done. Mr. Clark, if these things don't bother you, I am quite sorry. While our opinions may differ, I will refrain from name-calling even though you may think it to be against my "knuckleheaded liberal" nature.
