Collegian Staff Writer

The No. 66 Penn State men's tennis team extended its non-conference home winning streak to 57 matches by defeating two teams on Sunday.

The Lions (9-2, 0-1 Big Ten) swept both St. Bonaventure and St. Francis 7-0.

Junior Jamie Gresh posted a pair of straight set wins at the No. 1 position. He teamed with senior Matt Nielsen to post two wins at No. 1 doubles.

Penn State’s Matt Frakes hits the ball against American University earlier this season.

Nielsen came back to win 5-7, 7-6, 6-2 in three sets after losing set one to the Bonnies' freshman Joel Carney. Freshman Todd Stecko playing at No. 6 versus the Bonnies' senior Markus Arvaja also dropped his first set before winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in his first of two matches.

Juniors Chris Destefano and Steve van der Westhuyzen, along with sophomore Matt Frakes each posted a pair of singles' wins on Sunday.

"Wins like this give you confidence going into the Big Ten," Penn State men's tennis assistant coach Toby Simpson said.

The Red Flash match was lightning quick as St. Francis could take just 19 games off of the Lions in nine matches.

"The matches help because these are still competitive situations," Frakes said. "Getting out there and playing always helps to keep your competitive edge."

Sophomore Brad Nudell led his opponent, junior Jay Moore, 2-1 in the early going before winning 10 straight games to take the match (6-1, 6-0) in straight sets.

Frakes, after winning his first match of the day at No. 4 against the Bonnies (6-3) also defeated senior Israel Guterrez (6-3, 6-3) of the Red Flash (3-4) at No. 2.

"We try to attack more when playing teams like this," Frakes said. "We are an attacking team anyway, but today we pressured a little more and tried to get to the net."

The Lions head into this weekend with two matches on the road. The Lions travel to No. 45 Minnesota on Friday and to No. 60 Wisconsin on Sunday.

"We have a tough schedule," Simpson said. "These conference matches coming up are very important and the Big Ten is tough from top to bottom with all the ranked teams we have in the top 75."
