Lots need more security, police should patrol them

In response to a letter in yesterday's Collegian: No, waking up in the morning to a call from Police Services is not the most pleasant way to start one's day. Sorry about your sleeping bag Matthew Seton, that sucks. It doesn't suck as much as having your CD player stolen and your six-disc changer smashed along with your window on your birthday. But let's not get into that because I don't know who you're even complaining to in the first place. The burglars? Do you think they care?

Back to the issue at hand. I was a victim of a break-in last semester in Lot 43, and the recent problems in Lots 80 and 83 are showing the "progress" Police Services is making on security issues at Penn State. I find myself questioning where my money each semester goes when I receive a rude phone call at 7 a.m. from Penn State Police Services saying that my car needs my "attention." After the 30-minute trek to the lot, a police officer waiting by my car informed me that the grounds crew (not Police Services) reported my broken window that morning. My first question was, "Does Penn State take any responsibility for what goes on in private lots?"

The officer answered me with a chuckling "nope." My solution, which seems to be effective so far, considering my lack of options, was to strip my car bare on the inside. If the thievin' bastards want to steal my car, they can push it to their little burglar lair. As for Police Services, could you guys swing by the off-campus lots on an hourly basis since you're already cruising around all night? Is that too much to ask?
