Fine finish
Women gymnasts place second in final home showing of the season

Collegian Staff Writer

In its final showing of the season at Rec Hall, the No. 11 Penn State women's gymnastics team finished second only to No. 3 Alabama and ahead of both Rutgers and Cornell.

Alabama finished the meet with a 197.525, its highest score of the season while Penn State scored a 196.650. Rutgers came in third scoring 189.775 and Cornell rounded out the meet with a 184.600.

"I think we did really well overall," senior Maria Taylor said. "It was a tough meet going against Alabama. But hopefully this will help us build our confidence."

Taylor finished second on the bars for the Lions, scoring a 9.925. Other Penn State high scores came from sophomore Katie Rowland, who finished tied for first on beam with a 9.925, tied for second on floor with a 9.925, third on vault with a 9.825, and second in the all-around with a 39.575. Gemma Cuff tied Rowland on floor.

Penn State senior gymnast Maria Taylor performs on the balance beam in a quadrangular meet Saturday, Senior Day at Rec Hall.

"I was pleased," Taylor said. "I hit both my routines. The worst part would've been to go out falling."

Saturday was Senior Night for the Nittany Lions, where the two seniors-- along with Jen Drilling and E'Tona Ford who won't be returning to the team next season-- were honored with the traditional "S" blankets.

"It was an emotional night for the seniors," Penn State women's gymnastics coach Steve Shephard said. "It was their last appearance in Rec Hall."

Alabama's Adreé Pickens was the top performer of the night walking away with the all-around title after scoring a 9.950 on vault, bars and floor and a 9.900 on beam on her way to a 39.750 overall score. The score ties her career-best.

"We performed extremely well this evening, though we were not perfect," Alabama head coach Sarah Patterson said in a press release. "We struggled a bit in warmups, but obviously we came back strong. We have room to continue to build to have a perfect performance at SECs."

And like the Crimson Tide, Penn State wasn't perfect either. Despite not counting any falls throughout the meet, Penn State did have gymnasts fall on bars, beam and floor. After some changes in sophomore Leslie Bair's floor routine to add difficulty to her tumbling passes, Bair fell earning only a 8.750. Freshman Richelle Simpson fell during her beam routine and Gemma Cuff fell on bars as well.

Penn State will try and fix the small mistakes it is having before next weekend when it travels to Ann Arbor, Michigan to begin its post season competing in the Big Ten Championships. Last year the team finished second.
