Vandalized cars in Lot 83 shows need for security

I am writing in regard to the recent vandalism to the student cars in Lot 83. As a student who lives on campus, I pay $80 for a parking permit each semester. When I read about 25 cars that were broken into and a car that was set on fire, I wonder where that $80 dollars is going. The story says the incidents occurred between midnight and 4:30 a.m. and that it took a student to call Centre County's emergency communications center, not a campus police officer to notice the blaze and acts of vandalism.

Four and a half hours is a long time for these incidents to go unnoticed. I feel that my $160-a-year fee to park in an area as unmonitored as Lot 83 is unreasonable. The campus police make their presence known as issuers of parking tickets and directors of traffic, but monitoring parking lots for vandalism and arson must not be in the job description. Many other colleges use cameras for added security. Why doesn't Penn State? Twenty-five cars broken into and one set on fire. What is it going to take for Penn State to beef up the security of Lot 83?
