Sharing thoughts, opinions crucial to learning process
I find it odd that Matt McLaughlin, a history major, would be so arrogant as to think that past generations are "losers" for actively expressing their thoughts and concerns about their beloved alma mater. Isn't history based largely on elders passing thoughts, wisdom and knowledge down through the ages? I am greatly concerned that someone whose chosen course of study is about the past would lack the appreciation for prior generations. Generations will not always agree. This is to be expected. However, the act of sharing opinion and thought from more learned perspectives is valuable and essential if we are to evolve and learn from the mistakes of the past. What a sad loss it would be if we looked into the past and only found silence and complacency amongst those individuals who came before us. Wisdom and experience come with age. History is primarily passed from generation to generation through the written and spoken word. Mentors guide us through life and show us the path to success. Perhaps once Mr. Laughlin and Mr. Pipal are in the "real world" with the rest of us, they will come to appreciate these facts and see the value in sharing thoughts, feelings, and knowledge. After all, isn't that what they are paying tuition for now?
