Racism report about car not considered racist act
I am writing in response to the racism report published Wednesday. I became very disturbed that an innocent white lady had been accused of a racist action as a result of locking her car door. The African American student who reported this incident stated, "As I got closer to it (the car), I noticed a white lady sitting alone in the passenger seat who proceeded to lean over and lock her door." This "victim of racism" proceeded to call the action ignorant. After reading this "racism report" several times, I could not distinguish how an action like this could be considered racism. I do agree, however, that Penn State has problems with racism and steps need to be taken to solve such problems. On the other hand, if locking a car door to feel secure is considered a racist act, then I believe that certain issues surrounding racism at Penn State are suspect. It does not matter if the person approaching my car is black, white, or even green, if I feel unsafe, I am going to lock my car door. I am a firm believer of innocent until proven guilty. To accuse an innocent white lady of a "racist act" such as this is appalling. Finally, I would like to commend The Daily Collegian for publishing incidents of racism to promote awareness, but next time, please make sure these incidents are racist acts.
