Letter to the Editor
Tim Robbins is an activist, not an incoherent actor
In the Collegian on Tuesday, Greg Sturges expressed in his column that "the political opinions of actors are mostly the useless products of too many lines of cocaine sniffed from hookers' gleaming thighs" and that "Tim Robbins actually once said something coherent that wasn't read from a script." As an actor and as an activist who sees theatre and film as a powerful catalyst for social change, I found these assertions troublesome. Not only was Mr. Sturges' broad stereotype of actors offensive, but it only served to discredit his opinion. It is hard to take a person seriously after he has ignorantly demeaned an entire group of people. In addition, Mr. Sturges obviously did not take the time to research his remark regarding Tim Robbins, a dedicated social activist who is quite capable of not only making coherent statements without the aid of a script, but acting on those statements to bring about change. In the future, Mr. Sturges, please be more responsible with the words you chose in your columns. Tim Robbins has already established his credibility, but wasting print on offensive stereotypes will only damage your own.
