Charlie Hunter to grace Heritage Hall with guitar

He's not quite a one-man band, but he can multi-task pretty well.

On Thursday Charlie Hunter will perform with his band at 8 p.m. in Heritage Hall.

Hunter's mode of play is innovative because he plays both lead and bass parts simultaneously on his customized guitar.

His eight-string guitar is unique because it has five guitar strings and three bass strings.

His band's musical style is also pretty interesting. The Charlie Hunter Band combines funky dance floor grooves with rich percussion in its uncommon ballads. According to Hunter, the music is "improvisational-oriented pop music."

Band members Chris Lovejoy on congas, Stephen Chopek on drums, and John Ellis on the saxophone will join Hunter.

Their live performances are most notable for Hunter's improvisation and the band's high energy, drawing on the genres of jazz and pop music.

Hunter has recently released a self-titled album on the Blue Note label, and also released a solo album Solo Eight-String Guitar last August.

He has also performed on D'Angelo's latest funk album Voodoo.
