Support for John Lawless counters goal of education
I have one question for Amber Pawlik. Did you forget what the purpose of college is? Ms. Pawlik defends Rep. Lawless' attack on Penn State for two events held by student groups: Cuntfest and Sex Faire. She applauds Lawless "in his effort to return standards and intellectualism back to Penn State." I am curious as to which standards she is referring and how she defines intellectualism. By standards, I assume she means that everyone should accept the status quo and never make waves by voicing an opposing opinion. By intellectualism, I assume she means only absorbing knowledge in the classroom and never gaining new experiences first hand. College is more than reading, writing and arithmetic. It is also about growing as a person by developing an understanding of real life's problems, controversies and joys. If Ms. Pawlik disagrees with my definition of college, that's fine. However, I refuse to allow her closed mind prohibit me from opening mine. Penn State has not turned into a trashy talk show that "exalts perversion" for allowing events like Sex Faire and Cuntfest to take place. On the contrary, it has supported its status as an institution of higher learning by making available programs that address current issues relevant to the student body at Penn State. And, yes, sex is a relevant issue on campus. This controversy is entirely about free speech, not funding, because Lawless believes removing funds from PSU would economically prevent activities like this from occurring again. However, it has been repeatedly stated that no state money was used to conduct these activities. Reducing state funding to Penn State can only be interpreted as punishment for allowing Cuntfest and Sex Faire to take place.
