Letter to the Editor
Attacks on John Lawless equivalent to hate crimes
In her letter to The Daily Collegian, Katie Morris wrote, "Hate mail, on the other hand, is meant by its very nature to insult and scare those who receive it." In his letter to Rep. John Lawless, Bob Pickrell used the line, "I suppose the likelihood of you acting responsibly in this situation is about as likely as your eyes moving to the same level." This comment was directed at the fact that Rep. Lawless has a disability that was the result of a brain tumor. Would this be considered hate mail? We constantly hear stories of hate crimes, and what the university is doing to put an end to the actions of people who damage the reputation of Penn State. In the past few weeks, I have read letters in The Daily Collegian using words like immature, hypocritical, appalling and uncivilized to describe the actions of Rep. Lawless and the many who oppose the recent programs, instead of using them toward the actions of Bob Pickrell and the people that support him. As an alumnus of Penn State, I am ashamed that the administration of my alma mater chose to support the actions of Pickrell by not reprimanding him for his actions. It appears that the immature, hypocritical, appalling and uncivilized actions may be originating from our own backyard.
