Letter to the Editor
Administration, legislators should let students decide
I find all the hoopla over the relatively minor event called Sex Faire pretty amazing considering that for several years up until about 1985, X-rated movies were shown on weekends on the University Park campus. Debbie Does Dallas was a regular venue on a weekend night in the Forum Building. For $2, students could view an X-rated movie, which was heavily attended (usually by drunken males). It was a rite of passage for males to go to an X-rated movie on campus. I don't recall at the time any state legislator threatening to end Penn State's funding because of it. That's why Sex Faire, which seemed to have some educational value and was supportive of women, pales in comparison to the showing of porno flicks. Why did the student-sponsored movies come to an end? Because a large number of students voted for a USG candidate who made ending the X-rated movies part of his platform. It was not because of moral snobbery, but because it was degrading to women. But it was the student body that decided this, not the state Legislature or the administration, and it should be the students who decide which future events are appropriate.
