PSU looks for first win of season vs. Minutewomen

Collegian Staff Writer

Coming off two losses in its first two games, the Penn State women's lacrosse team is looking to jumpstart its season with a win against Massachusetts at 3 p.m. today at Bigler Field.

Penn State opened its season with losses to both Cornell and No. 7 James Madison 11-9 and 14-11, respectively.

"I think it's just a matter in the Cornell game we just didn't execute our game plan," Penn State women's lacrosse coach Suzanne Weinberg said. "We didn't do the little things. Saturday against JMU we did a much better job. We corrected a lot of things from the first game.

"On Tuesday, we just need to take care of the little things and take care of the game from start to finish."

Despite the losses last week, Penn State saw strong performances from freshman attacker Katie Jeschke, goalkeeper Megan Ames and sophomore Colleen O'Hara. Jeschke scored three goals against Cornell while O'Hara scored three goals combined in last week's games.

"Colleen O'Hara was awesome," Weinberg said. "She played incredible lacrosse. She was hustling all over the field and going hard to goal. She really played a phenomenal game."

Massachusetts enters today's game 0-1 after a 9-8 loss to Harvard. And like Penn State, it is looking for a win. Also in common with Penn State, Massachusetts brings with it a new head coach in Phil Barnes. Barnes has been part of the coaching staff at Massachusetts for three seasons and served as interim head coach last season at the university.

Midfielder Alison DeCecco scored twice in Penn State’s loss to James Madison Saturday.

"I'm very excited about the opportunity to continue to coach the women's lacrosse program here at UMass," Barnes said in a press release. "It is an honor to be associated with such a great program at a distinguished university."

The Minutewomen went 10-7 last season, helping to capture the program's first-ever Atlantic 10 championship.

Although the Lions and the Minutewomen didn't meet last season, both have something to prove going into today's game.

Both are looking for their first win, but only one will come away with the glory.

"We are still a fairly inexperienced team," Weinberg said. "We have a lot of young players out there. As long as we can learn from these losses and not dwell on them, we can get ready to go after UMass."
