Lawless and PSU alumnus need to take broader look

As a former student here, Mr. Bankos should know that not all the people at this school are identical.

While some students here may have been well off and "grew up knowing that ... they will get their way," it should be obvious that others aren't so lucky. I personally know several people who are working their way through college and only made it here as a result of nearly Herculean efforts on their own part.

They weren't handed everything they ever wanted on a silver platter, but yet Bankos' comments include them when he makes such broad generalizations about the student body at Penn State.

Isn't it about time the people involved in this conflict took a step back and took a broader perspective?

Rep. Lawless made the first mistake when he called for a suspension of funding for the entire university based on the actions of a select few.

Now we've digressed to the point where our own alumni are attacking the entire student body based on the actions of a few of its members.

Overreaction seems to be the norm these days. It's time we start to put things in perspective and concede that the Sex Faire is not representative of all campus events and that the opinions of some students do not necessitate the condemnation of all of us enrolled here at Penn State.

Rep. Lawless' suggestion is the equivalent of shutting down all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces just because the missile defense system tests failed. Similarly, do we consider everyone of German descent to be racist, anti-Semitic skinheads just because of the opinions and actions of Adolf Hitler and his associates?

Of course not, and it's time we started thinking this way about the current conflict here at Penn State, which has already been blown completely out of proportion.
