Letter to the Editor
Criticism of China as host lacks provable evidence

I am hereby writing this letter to express my complaint about a letter in the Feb. 28 issue of this newspaper. In my opinion, the letter from Joe Mickey, "Olympic Games of 2008 should not be in China," has insulted China and inevitably misled the readers to believe something without provable evidences.

One of the reasons that the author criticized China to be ineligible for the Olympic Games is that "the government of China uses its political prisoners as bargaining chips to gain access to the advantages of the free world."

I am surprised to see that the author has applied such a biased attitude toward China. The spirit of the Olympic Games can only be truly and fully appreciated when it is free from politics and ideology. Meanwhile, the United States and China have made all efforts to gain mutual understanding and trust from each other for a long time, even during the Cold War.

Olympic Games, as the most important worldwide sports festival, brings people together for better communication and understanding. However, if "answer to any games awarded to China must be boycott," I would doubt it is wise to segregate such a large and important country from the "free world."

Besides, I do not believe that "it would be a repeat of the 1930s when the games were awarded to Hitler." It is a pity that misunderstanding has blinded peoples' minds; thus, it is significantly necessary for China to demonstrate her different aspects to the whole world with such a chance as Olympic Games.
