A Penn State student was listed in serious condition yesterday, after a vehicle accident while on Spring Break in Mexico.
Eileen Shirk, 22, was flown by MEDJET Assistance to Toledo Hospital in Ohio where she was operated on and treated for two broken arms, a broken clavicle and three fractured ribs.
Three out of the five students involved in the accident were Penn State students and were injured, while two men driving with the women suffered minor injuries. No one could confirm whether the men were students. Tram-Anh Tran (senior-finance) suffered a broken arm, while the precise injuries Keri Zoog (senior-marketing) received are unknown.
Executive Vice President of MEDJET Assistance Phillip Morris said the group of five was driving Thursday in a jeep in Acapulco, Mexico when they saw a car illegally parked. Morris said the male driver drove to the side to avoid the parked car and struck a truck head-on. The impact of the crash ejected passengers from the vehicle.
Both women were members of Pi Beta Phi sorority. A member of the sorority said there were no seat belts available in the jeep and that Shirk is expected to return to Penn State in the fall, while Tran and Zoog are expected to return sometime this week.
