Lawless' reaction to e-mail immature and hypocritical
Just when I thought the Lawless/Sex Faire frenzy couldn't get any bigger, I read an article titled "Student's insulting message prompts Lawless to retaliate. "Among bold attacks on Penn State's academic integrity and the character of its students, Lawless is quoted as using the term "punk" when referring to Bob Pickrell, the student who sent Lawless an "angry e-mail" concerning his efforts to suspend Penn State's government funding. In reference to Pickrell's e-mail, Lawless is further quoted as writing, "I think it clearly demonstrates the ability or lack thereof of PSU students to communicate on an academic and professional level." What is professional about a state representative calling a college student a punk, threatening to use an e-mail to keep the student from getting a job after he graduates, and then blatantly insulting the mental and moral capacities of the 80,000 students attending a university as prestigious as Penn State? One person should not be judged based on a single heated e-mail, let alone an entire university. Besides, Lawless opened himself up to this kind of public criticism the moment he decided the use the Sex Faire as a shoddy excuse to keep funds from Penn State. Before Lawless can continue to call a harmless, $50, student-run event such as Sex Faire tasteless, he should think twice about his own tasteless, immature comments toward students and our university.
