Letter to the Editor
Letting China host games will unite the East, West
I am writing this letter in response to what Joe Mickey wrote about Olympic Games in China. I think the 2008 Olympic Game should be awarded to China. One major goal of the Olympic is to unite all nations. Letting China host the Olympics will give the East and the West a chance to further understand each other. It is ignorant for Joe Mickey to compare the current China to Hitler's Germany. I visited China last summer and saw that it had improved a lot in the past 10 years. It is adapting many good aspects of the western culture and values. Given the chance and time, China can turn out to be a great nation. Mickey suggested Americans should boycott any games awarded to China to show character. One thing I learned in America is that people do not show character through ignorance and prejudice. I am proud to be a Chinese American. One thing I like about this country is its diversity. By interacting with people from different cultures, I had broadened my view of the world and gained different perspectives. Too bad many people took this opportunity for granted. There is an old Chinese saying: A frog that stays in a well all its life will never know how big the sky really is. Maybe it's time for Joe Mickey to leave his well.
