College is about learning; events not educational
With the recent brawl over Sex Faire/ Cuntfest, I just have one question for everybody: Did you forget we are in college now? It seems many think we are not in college, but rather on the Jerry Springer Show. Cuntfest? Sex Faire? Those would make great titles for the talk show, which exalts perversion and white trash. Penn State is supposedly an institution of higher learning. Were you planning on learning when you got here or did you think it would be a place to giggle over taboo subjects and use everyone else's money for whatever tasteless event you felt like throwing on? Speaking of spending money in whatever way you want as if it grows on trees, this "brawl" is not a free speech issue. It is a funding issue. This university is set up for one reason. That is to promote higher learning. Penn State has clearly failed that one goal. Hence, Pennsylvania taxpayers should not have to fund this university. If someone were suggesting putting the hosts of the events in jail for saying taboo words, then it would be a free speech issue. But no one is suggesting that. The focus is on removing funds, not putting people in jail. It is hence a funding issue, not a free speech issue. "Viewpoint neutral" does not mean "value neutral." If an event does not provide educational value, funds should not be provided. I applaud Lawless in his effort to return standards and intellectualism back to Penn State.
