Letter to the Editor
Students against Lawless can make a difference
Students who want to take action against Representative Lawless' campaign of calumny and intimidation against Penn State are in a good position to do so. When Mr. Lawless runs for re-election next year, how would it be if a large party of our students showed up to campaign door-to-door against him? They would have to be at their best very respectful and well-informed. Like the students who made such a favorable impression and made history in that famous New Hampshire primary of 1968, they could make a difference. They could go armed with photocopied news stories and editorials. The Harrisburg Patriot-News, for one, has had some telling things to say about Mr. Lawless' actions. It may be that his constituents are not as familiar with what he has been doing as we are. Perhaps they would not like his having bad-mouthed our entire student body and administration because of one insulting letter that he received. It may be that they would not care for his having promised to block the career of the student who wrote that letter (as though there were no right in this society to insult public officials). Possibly they would feel that someone fairer and more moderate would represent them better, someone who wouldn't try to bully us, play the demagogue at our expense or try to hold our appropriation hostage. How about it? Democracy and freedom, anyone?
