Letter to the Editor
Hate crimes and Sex Faire not regarded same
Five minutes after reading Mark Fallet's letter, my head is still spinning in anger and disbelief. Did I misunderstand something or did Mr. Fallet justify racially motivated hate crimes as "in essence...people expressing their dissatisfaction with another group," a privilege protected by the First Amendment? Whoa, Mark, not the most accurate statement to make. First of all, sending a death threat in the mail, throwing rocks, almost hitting someone with your truck do these sound like expressions of dissatisfaction? They sound more like threats and attempted assaults to me. I don't think these are protected in our rights to free of speech. Still don't agree, Mr. Fallet? Maybe if we make it more personal to you. Say hypothetically, your younger sister is a biology major at Harvard. Imagine that two guys who just failed their bio midterms are, in an attempt to "express their dissatisfaction" with this certain group of bio majors, throwing rocks at your sister from the top of an eight-story building. I can't speak for you, Mr. Fallet, but I wouldn't be so quick to forgive their actions as a First Amendment right. While I understand that the purpose of your letter was to address the inconsistency (in your opinion) of the Collegian deeming certain things as "free speech" and others as not, I think you could have picked a much better example to be placed on the level of vulgarity of drawings of genitalia.
