Letter to the Editor
One relatively small event caused overblown brawl
The controversy that John Lawless has created concerning Sex Faire is making me ill. The Sex Faire event in itself was so very, very small in proportion to the other activities on this campus that I wonder what Lawless' true intentions were in creating such a ridiculous furor. Is he perhaps using the Sex Faire as a way to infiltrate the media for his own personal, political gain? Was he actively searching for an event that he could use to make moral commentary on society? The main reason this issue makes me sick is that Lawless thought for one instant that the entire PSU community should be penalized for the actions of a proportionately small group of students and their one event. Sure he may not agree with the actions and beliefs espoused at the Sex Faire, but that does not give him any authority, moral or otherwise, to establish what Penn State students can or cannot say or do. It should be the responsibility of this community to decide how to handle future controversy. Until Rep. Lawless moves to State College, I ask him to not speak for the people living here. Some of us were quite content until he unnecessarily opened his biased mouth. At this point, we can only hope that the rest of our representatives do not agree with Lawless' silly censorship and suggestion for punishment and that his attempt to gain political clout will backfire as he loses his next election.
