Letter to the Editor
Smoking is hard to stop; isolated room is extreme
After reading Mr. Newman's ludicrous letter Tuesday, I feel the need to share my disgust with his feelings towards smokers. Yes, I am a smoker, and I know it's a bad habit, but bad habits are hard to break. Regardless, I don't appreciate the idea of being put in a small non-ventilated room with fellow smokers every time I feel the need to smoke a cigarette. "But what about nonsmokers like myself?" Well, if your friends smoke around you, I guess you have to choose between the purity of your virgin lungs and quality time with your friends. I'm sure your presence means a lot to them, but you're not obligated to contaminate your lungs simply for their pleasure. Besides, if you're in an establishment with numerous smokers, it's most likely a bar, in which case you might want to consider writing another letter taking a stance against poisoning your liver. Would your solution for that one be to stick all our intoxicated livers into a closed container of alcohol? If Mr. Newman is so worried about his health, I suggest he attacks another group of air polluters before bashing smoking and trying to solve a serious addiction our society suffers from by simply putting all the smokers in an easy-bake oven.
