Letter to the Editor
Actions of select students hurting chances for funds
I just spent the last two days watching President Spanier apologize to the Pennsylvania Senate and House Budget Appropriations committees for the actions of a few ignorant students out of the total student population of 81,000. I am appalled that these students felt that they had the right and the responsibility to personally attack and hurt another human being just because they do not agree with his actions. This whole thing came to light because of legislative objections to Sex Faire and other student activities on campus as of late. Although I do not agree with these particular activies and find them personally offensive, I do understand that there are certain First Amendment rights that may protect them be stopped. In particular, Rep. Lawless has found this to be highly offensive and has been very vocal in his efforts to see that they never occur again. The unfortunate act that I am writing about stem from numerous letters that Mr. Lawless read to President Spanier that he has received from students, which go after his intelligence and physical features that are a part of things in his past, all because he has threatened to hold funds from Penn State. This is not the way to get their point across and only goes to make Penn State look bad and hurt the administration's effort to acquire sufficient funds to run the university and to keep your tuition rates down. If they want to help the university explain the merits of the issue at hand and do not take the low road of life and stoop to personal attacks on people. I am proud to be a Penn State graduate, but after hearing the e-mails that I read, I am ashamed as many others are that our students cannot act appropriately when the disagree with an opinion.
