Letter to the Editor
Religion basis for society, should be given respect
I am appalled by the lack of respect the Mr. Lazzeri has shown religious establishments, especially that of Catholicism. I was profoundly disturbed by Mr. Lazzeri's comment on "books that were written thousands of years ago" as an outdated moral compass. How dare he claim to be a Roman Catholic and still denounce the Holy Bible as an outdated moral compass. Millions of Christians follow the Holy Bible's message of love towards all, charity, selflessness, compassion, forgiveness, and all of the wonderful qualities that we as a society admire. If every Catholic in the United States devoted himself to follow the Holy Bible's teachings, then many of the ills facing our society would cease to burden us. The institution of marriage would be once again respected. Divorce would not tear families apart. The disintegration of values, promiscuity, violence, and other deplorable vices would stop running rampant. Lazzeri claims that we all have moral authority. Then from where do you think our moral values originate? The answer lies within those dusty outdated books such as the Holy Bible, the Torah and other religious text that are the basis of many religions. Even our Constitution, which clearly states a separation between church and state, evidently has fundamental Christian doctrines such as the equality of all men, a fair trial and our inalienable rights. Therefore, I only ask that please do not desecrate the religious texts that are the moral foundation for most people. Do not disregard the Holy Bible as if it were an outdated library book because it helped through its message of respect, honesty, and fairness lay the foundation of one of the greatest nations in history.
