Letter to the Editor
Thon coverage adequate; other news pertinent too
In response to Jaclyn Sheehan's letter to the editor concerning the coverage of Thon, I feel it is necessary to write on behalf of the news media. Ms. Sheehan seems to be overly concerned with what she calls "society's" priorities and takes it upon herself, much like Rep. John Lawless, to impose her priorities onto others. What she seems to feel is unworthy of coverage is the First Amendment and the lawmaker who seems hell-bent on dragging Penn State's name through the mud. We as students at a nationally renowned university, as well as U.S. citizens, must make it our responsibility to make our voices heard and our rights upheld. The Sex Faire was the catalyst for such an opportunity. While Dance Marathon is an incredible student-run philanthropy and deserving of substantial coverage, Ms. Sheehan inaccurately compares the coverage of the two events. The Sex Faire was not given coverage because of its content; it was given coverage because of Rep. Lawless' attempt to thwart Penn State students' right to free of speech. The rigorous volunteering put forth by Thon participants was noble indeed. However, I must question your motives: Was it to help raise money for pediatric cancer or was it to get a pat on the back for a job well done?
