I am writing in response to last Wednesday's syndicated political cartoon. As the title suggests, whoever drew that cartoon does not know what really went on. It's also a gross exaggeration. First, the USS Greeneville is an attack submarine; it does not carry nuclear missiles.
Those submarines do not even operate out of Pearl Harbor. Even if it was, launching nuclear missiles is a much more complicated process than is shown to prevent any such accidental launch. People here and over in Japan need to stop acting like that submarine torpedoed the Japanese ship, because that is not what happened.
Further, those civilians on board were highly supervised, and the sub was conducting a legitimate drill. No one was fooling around, as one Japanese person suggested.
The worst thing about all this is it's only another demonstration about how "innocent until proven guilty" has been completely forgotten here. Japan has honorably withheld comment until the all the investigations are finished.
