Ice Lions earn split in final weekend of play

Collegian Staff Writer

The Penn State Ice Lions concluded their season by splitting two games in a league tournament over the weekend at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The Lions clobbered Pittsburgh 7-4 on Saturday, thus avenging their two losses to the Panthers earlier in the year. IUP got the better of the Lions in the finals on Sunday night by outscoring them 5-2.

In the victory over Pitt, Ice Lion forwards Jake Wolfe, Ralph Stoehr, and Ben Goodman all scored two goals each for Penn State. Five other Ice Lions were credited with assists, including defensemen Jason Smith, Dave Jones, and goaltender Brian Gratz. Ice Lion goalie David Levine started the game and ended up with 36 saves.

Against IUP, the Ice Lions' top scoring line found the back of the net one last time when Wolfe scored off assists from Stoehr and J.T. D'Alessandro.

"Stoehr and J.T. played really good together, and they deserve a lot of credit for my goals this season," Wolfe said.

Sophomore forward Tom McCor-mick scored the second goal for the Ice Lions off teammate Eric Ritter's assist. Heading into the final period, the Ice Lions were only down 3-2, but a non-call on IUP's fourth goal put the game out of reach for Penn State.

The Ice Lions finished the season with a 10-14-2 mark, but they were able to rattle off four wins in their last six games.

"We came together towards the end," Ice Lion defenseman Jason Mals said. "Our dedication definitely showed this weekend."

"They played really well today," Ice Lion head coach Mo Stroemel said. "If we played like we did at the end of the season all season, we would have been up there."

The Ice Lions will miss the presence of team captain and leading scorer Jake Wolfe and fellow seniors Jason Smith and Ken Young next year, but Stroemel knows that he has a young and talented team returning next season.

"I think they need to work over the summer in order to come back at least where we are now, if not better," he said.

"I honestly believe with the core that we have coming back, there is a possibility that we could make another run at getting to the (national) tournament next year."
