Penn State women's tennis tacked on three wins to its winning streak this weekend.
The Nittany Lions (6-2) extended the streak to six matches as they notched victories over Eastern Michigan 4-3, Penn 5-2 and Cornell 4-3.
"It's always good to beat the intrastate rival," Penn State women's tennis coach Buffy Baker said. "When we needed to play big, we played big."
After securing a two-point lead against Eastern Michigan on Friday, the Lions found a tied-up match after singles losses by Rebecca Ho and Janelle Perez. Down a break in the second set, Judy Wang fought back to win and put Penn State back on top with a 3-2 lead. Senior Pilar Montgomery seized the day when she dominated Rebecca Hawkins in straight sets. The win gave the Lions a team victory.
"Starting in the Big Ten, I feel confident," Baker said. "We have a home-court advantage more than we've traditionally had. It makes a difference. If we play solid like Friday and Saturday, next week will be exciting tennis."
The Lions came out firing early against Cornell. The team of Montgomery and Ho beat down their counterparts 8-2. Leigh Ann Merryman and Teresa Whiteside cruised to an 8-1 victory. Two of the three doubles wins gave the Lions a one-point lead.
But play in singles looked sluggish at times. Three Lions Montgomery, Wang, and Perez were pushed to three sets with Montgomery and Perez winning.
"Today, we didn't build on the momentum of the previous day," Baker said. "Cornell came out pumped. Several players backed down after they felt the pressure. It was a good wake-up call. You can't take anyone for granted."
Like she had done the day before against Penn, Ho responded to the tight team score with a solid performance. Her win sealed Cornell's fate as Penn State took a 4-2 lead.
Still, the Lions took away three wins. Even though Montgomery was talking to herself on the court Sunday in the second set, her game returned for her domination of the third, reflecting her stellar play of a day earlier.
Montgomery beat Penn standout Sanela Kunovac in straight sets.
"I was excited about Pilar beating Kunovac for the third time this year," Baker said. "(Pilar) stayed calm and played quality tennis."
The Lions enter Big Ten play next weekend against Wisconsin and Minnesota ranked 72 in the ITA ratings. The Golden Gophers finished second in the league last spring.
