[Monday,
Feb. 26, 2001 ] Today's University Park
forecast
Last nights northwesterly winds will
diminish this morning as cool Canadian air infiltrates
Happy Valley today. With high pressure dominating the
weather picture for most of the week, the sun will break
through the clouds from time to time. This high will also
keep temperatures below normal through midweek. Little to
no precipitation will fall, continuing the recent dry
spell.

Weather
Highlight
The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO)
governs winter weather in State College as much, if not
more, than the familiar El Niño. During the negative
phase of NAO, cold Canadian air typically pours into
Happy Valley, as in the 1995-1996 season. The positive
phase typically keeps brutally cold air to the north, as
in the 1998-1999 and 1999-2000 seasons. Since July 2000,
the negative phase has dominated the NAO, and State
College has experienced colder than normal temperatures.
As the negative phase of the NAO strengthens,
Pennsylvanias winter will continue well into March.
