Record-setting night for PSU gymnastics

Collegian Staff Writer

Penn State women's gymnastics coach Steve Shephard jumped up and down on the side of the mat. As Maria Taylor finished her routine anyone of the 2,084 in attendance could see the excitement in Shephard's eyes. As she hit her dismount, Shephard rose his hands to show his enthusiasm.

"It's so exciting," Taylor said. "We put it together two weeks in a row. It shows we can compete with the other top teams in the country."

Taylor was happy, Shephard was happy, the team was happy, and they had every reason to be.

The No. 11 Nittany Lions beat more school records for the second week in a row Friday night. The team topped its overall school record of 197.025 set Feb. 19, 1999 against Alabama, scoring a 197.450 against Massachusetts. Massachusetts ended the meet with a 193.675.

But it didn't end there. The Lions also set new records on both bars and floor scoring a 49.500 and a 49.725, respectively. Maria Taylor's 9.95 on the bars tied the school record shared by former Penn State gymnast Nikki Smith.

When it came time for floor the Nittany Lions set more individual records. Five out of the six competitors in the event scored career bests including senior Gemma Cuff who scored a 9.975 on the event.

"Floor was definitely a gift," Cuff said. "I've been wanting to get a high score on floor for a long time."

Once again, sophomore Katie Rowland's performance on each of the four events garnered her the all-around title.

Rowland scored a 39.650, tying the school record in the all-around, which she only set last week. Rowland finished second on the vault, bars and floor, and notched a third place finish on beam.

Other Nittany Lions also saw some more action this week. Sophomore Leslie Bair scored a season best 9.725 on vault and a career best 9.950 on floor. Junior Nikki Bongiovanni's 9.900 on bars was both her season and personal best score. Sophomore Katie McAvoy scored her career high score on floor finishing with a 9.900.

"It was a record setting performance," Shephard said. "The emotion was there and the confidence was there."

With this confidence the Nittany Lions will travel to face Maryland Saturday in hopes of remaining right where they've been for the last two weeks — at the top of their game.

"They're for real," Shephard said. "It's becoming more real for them as they keep performing it over and over."
