Penn State baseball coach Joe Hindelang got his 500th career win in dramatic fashion on Sunday when Mike DeRenzo’s double in the top half of the tenth inning gave the Nittany Lions a 7-6 win over Virginia. Penn State lost two games to the Cavaliers on Saturday to bring their record to 2-5.
Penn State, trailing 6-2, came back to tie the game in the eighth. Aaron Tressler got the first win of his college career, going four and and one third innings allowing just three hits and no runs while striking out five to shut down the Cavalier offense.
Chris Wright had a home run in the game for the Lions, whose bats finally awoke from their winter hibernation as they recorded 12 hits.
On Saturday, Penn State opened up a 4-0 lead but Virginia scored 15 unanswered runs and won the first game. A grandslam by Mark Rueffert proved to be the catalyst for ten run sixth inning that wrapped up the victory.
Rueffert reprised his role as the hero in the night cap as his two-out bases loaded single gave the Cavaliers the sweep.
Penn State had tied the game in the top of the seventh, which was scheduled to be the last of the game, when Zack Smithlin smacked a two-run double that capped a four run inning.
Virginia is 5-1 on the year.
