Letter to the Editor
Editors should have faith in new party's candidates
In the past few days, the Collegian has been paying special attention to the forming of the Student Party, the newest political party in State College. In an editorial, the Collegian expressed concern in students running for borough council, feeling that the students who will run are not prepared to meet the commitment necessary in order to be a successful member of the council. The Collegian, as well as members of council, state that this is a job that requires time and effort. If a student does get elected to the seat, he will be required to stay in that seat for four years, despite the fact that they may graduate in less time. By making these statements, it as if they feel that the students running have put no time or thought into their decision. The students have dedicated time, research and effort into their ideas and campaigns. They were not hastily made at a keg party on Fraternity Row. The Student Party's dedication is second to none. I find it troubling that the current council and the Collegian editorial staff have such little faith in students' ability to make informed and educated decisions.
