Media focus on Sex Faire, not enough on PSU's Thon
Last weekend, thousands of Penn State students participated in Dance Marathon. This event raised more than $3.6 million for children with cancer, but it seems as though this event was overshadowed nationally as society's attention was shifted from this significant event to one that only gained national attention because it managed to shock society Sex Faire. I am embarrassed as a member of a society in which we would rather hear about other people's sexual preferences than about the positive contributions that are being made. The media, Dr. Laura and others have caused such hype over events like the Sex Faire, giving them a bad name and then defining our generation by them. If society is looking for something that accurately depicts our generation, then look to the dancers who didn't have to dance for 48 hours on their feet without any sleep, but did it because they wanted to. Look to the students who volunteered at Thon and those supporters who packed into Rec Hall with tears in their eyes, listening to the families talk about their struggles and how they have managed to fight and overcome them. Last, what society overlooked this weekend can be summed up without saying anything at all. What society overlooked was the smile on every kid's face this weekend and the happiness they expressed as they played with the dancers. Despite what society chooses to draw its attention to, I know that there are positive things going on at Penn State and events like Thon are proof of that.
